Art Deco Coffee Service
1930s, German

The handles of this handsome Art Deco silver plate coffee and tea service were weak in their original design. We strengthened the joints of the broken handles, reassembled the pots and blended the colors to match.

Art Deco coffee service with broken handles, before restoration. This is only one example of Art Deco objects which we repair. Art Deco sculptures and figurines are others.

Note the broken joint end of the handle, made of an early plastic. Attached to the pot by pins which go through the holes in the pot's 'ferrule', the handle fractured, like a broken tooth.

Art Deco coffee pot set; completed restoration. Art Deco design was prominent in the 1930's, and came from the Bauhaus, the most famous art school and movement in Twentieth Century Germany. HItler shut down the Bauhaus, but many of the artists, craftsmen, and designers continued to work in Germany. This accounts for the powerful influence of German design even as the Third Reich was killing and persecuting these artists.

Completed restoration and conservation of the set. A crucial final step is blending the colors at the joint, and reintegrating the colors of all parts of the set.
